About Us
Director’s Address
A warm welcome to Sacred Heart College Malta, a vibrant and dynamic learning community deeply rooted in over a century of educational and formational excellence.
Founded in 1903 by the Society of the Sacred Heart, the College pioneered truly holistic education in Malta. Today, we remain committed to furthering this rich vision and heritage at the College.
Our educational experience is built around the five goals of a Sacred Heart Education: Faith, Intellect, Character, Community, and Social Awareness. These five goals are at the heart of all we do to prepare our students to become proactive and responsible 21st century citizens, women with purpose and drive who are agents of positive change in the world around them.
Inspired by the words of our foundress, St Madeleine Sophie Barat, who declared, “even for one child, I would have founded the Society,” the individual is pivotal to the formation and community experience offered at the College. Every member of our community—be it student, staff member, or parent—is a valued and cherished companion in our individual and collective journey of growth and capacity building.
The College is active in promoting this sense of purpose and togetherness internationally within the Network of Sacred Heart Schools. As members of this vibrant body, we continue to explore opportunities for growth and international collaboration on different levels, perpetuating the mission and vision of St Madeleine Sophie at the College and beyond.
At the College we feel privileged to facilitate the journey of every student and College community member in discovering God, themselves, those around them, their surroundings, and their opportunities.
As you explore our website, we invite you to discover the opportunities for growth, learning, and personal development on offer at Sacred Heart College, Malta. Together, let us strive for excellence and positively impact our world.

Who We Are
Sacred Heart College offers compulsory schooling for girls aged 5 to 16.
Strategically situated between the towns of St Julian’s, Sliema, Gżira and San Ġwann, the College is located just off the Regional Road and is easily accessible from across the Island. Its extensive grounds comprise two imposing school buildings that are rich in architectural and aesthetic beauty. The larger of the two first opened its doors in 1907 and today is our Senior School while the smaller was built in 1920 and accommodates the Junior School. The College grounds also feature 2 theatres, one of which is a state-of-the-art Auditorium which is available for rental and where professional performances are regularly staged. Other facilities include the old nunnery which adjoins the Senior School building and four outlying houses of varying sizes.
The College is equipped with two indoor gyms and two multi-purpose sports areas, one of which features a 120m track, basketball court, volleyball court, 2 netball courts, 5-a side football pitch and a long jump sand pit. All of these are set within a large expanse of landscaped garden that provides a unique setting in terms of characteristics and size, in what is otherwise a largely urban area.
The Junior School runs from Year 1 to Year 6 and has three classes per year level, each typically 23 students strong. Classrooms are bright and airy and are organised over 3 storeys, with an intermediate level between the 1st and the 2nd floor. Each year level meets for assembly once weekly with assembly topics touching on such varied subjects as religion, social awareness, community and care for others. Educators and students make copious use of the outdoor areas of the College for teaching and learning alongside the many outdoor recreational and sports activities enjoyed by students.
The Senior School is organised over 5 year levels, from Year 7 to Year 11. There are 5 classes per year level, each composed of a maximum of 21 students. At Year 7, 21 additional students are enrolled through the Church School Ballot system. Students benefit from a broad-based curriculum and here again, significant use is made of the outdoor areas of the College for pedagogical as well as recreational purposes. Classrooms and specialist rooms are spread out over 3 storeys with most classrooms being situated around the Quadrangle, a large, arched cloister-style central courtyard which forms the heart of the Senior School building. Classrooms in the Senior School are generally large, bright, airy and have very high ceilings. The College Chapel is situated centrally at the rear end of the Quadrangle. It features a significant number of artefacts brought to Malta directly from France by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart
In the Sections that follow, we are pleased to journey with you through the curriculum and pedagogy of the College which is centred around the charism particular to the Society of the Sacred Heart which places the knowledge and the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as a central tenet of its formational experience.

Our roots
The Society of the Sacred Heart was founded in Malta in August 1903. By this time, it was already well-established in Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. A number of families in Malta had begun educating their children within Sacred Heart Schools in European countries such as at Trinita’ dei Monti, Rome; at Roehampton, London and at the Rue de Varenne, Paris. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before parents began to request a Sacred Heart school for their children’s education in Malta.
