Our roots

The Society of the Sacred Heart was founded in Malta in August 1903. By this time, it was already well-established in Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. A number of families in Malta had begun educating their children within Sacred Heart Schools in European countries such as at Trinita’ dei Monti, Rome; at Roehampton, London and at the Rue de Varenne, Paris. Therefore, it was only a matter of time before parents began to request a Sacred Heart school for their children’s education in Malta.

A Day of Celebration and Gratitude: Farewell to Ms Joanna Attard Pulis

Sacred Heart College marked the retirement of Ms Joanna Attard Pulis with a full day of meaningful celebrations, reflecting the deep appreciation and affection held for her by the entire school community.

The day began with a Thanksgiving Mass celebrated by Fr Charles Mallia, Fr John Scicluna and Fr Marco Portelli. Joining this special celebration were members of Ms Attard Pulis’ family, Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart, members of the Board of Governors, and representatives of the Parent Teacher Association, together with the College’s Senior Leadership Team and all Senior School students. During the Mass, the community came together to thank God for blessing the College with Ms Attard Pulis’ vision, leadership and service over the years.

The School Head Girl and the Year 11 class prefects addressed Ms Attard Pulis, paying tribute to her closeness to students and her constant encouragement to live the values and Goals of the Sacred Heart community.

At the conclusion of the Mass, Fr Marco Portelli, Fr John Scicluna, and Sr Carmen each expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Ms Attard Pulis, thanking her for her dedicated work and for consistently promoting faith and a deep love for the Sacred Heart throughout her years at the College.

Following the Mass, Dr Joe Gauci, College Director, and Mr Anthony Saliba, Chairperson of the Board of Governors, presented Ms Attard Pulis with a commemorative plaque and gifts as a token of gratitude for her thirty years of dedicated service, thanking her for her drive, commitment and unwavering support of the College. Ms Analise Muscat Pulis, Learning Support Educator and sister of Ms Attard Pulis, also delivered a heartfelt message, expressing thanks for her service, support and wishing her every success in the future.

The celebrations then continued outdoors, where guests, together with class prefects and sub-prefects, gathered on the College grounds for the planting of a conifer tree in honour of Ms Attard Pulis’ years of service. The tree was blessed by Fr Charles, a symbolic and lasting reminder of her legacy at Sacred Heart College.

Guests were later invited to share tea, coffee, and fellowship before the celebrations resumed with a special general assembly for students and invited guests. Each year group prepared a unique farewell tribute: some students sang, others danced, recited poems, or presented creative messages. One particularly memorable moment was the presentation of a “report card” highlighting the many admirable qualities Ms Attard Pulis demonstrated throughout her leadership journey.

Ms Elaine Siegler, Junior School Head and close friend of Ms Attard Pulis, shared an emotional message and presented her with a gift. Ms Noreen Heenan, Goals Coordinator of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, also conveyed her appreciation through a recorded message sent from Ireland, thanking Ms Attard Pulis for her commitment to both the College and the wider Network. This was accompanied by a beautiful floral tribute.

The celebration concluded with a heartfelt message from Ms Lilian Grech, close friend of Ms Attard Pulis and Deputy Head of the Senior School. Ms Grech, who will be assuming the role of Acting Head of School, thanked Ms Attard Pulis for her friendship, mentorship, and unwavering support, and praised her for the many positive changes she brought about for the wellbeing of the entire school community.

Ms Attard Pulis then addressed the assembly, expressing her sincere thanks to everyone for making her final day at Sacred Heart College so memorable and special, and for the constant support she experienced from every member of the community throughout her years of service.

The final farewells were shared during an after-school gathering, where friends and Senior School staff came together to reminisce, share stories, and celebrate Ms Attard Pulis’ remarkable journey over food and drinks.

The entire day was a fitting tribute to a leader who has given so much to Sacred Heart College and its community. As she now begins a new chapter, we wish Ms Joanna Attard Pulis every happiness and fulfilment as she enjoys time with her family and friends and pursues the things she loves most. The Sacred Heart community wishes her all the very best for the future.

Thank you Ms Joanna Attard Pulis

Sacred Heart College bids a heartfelt farewell to Ms Joanna Attard Pulis as she retires after 30 years of dedicated service to our school community.

Ms Attard Pulis began her journey at Sacred Heart College as a Mathematics teacher, a role she carried out with commitment and passion for ten years. Following her successful years in the classroom, she took on the role of Deputy Head of School, marking the beginning of a leadership journey defined by vision, care, and service. Ten years ago, she assumed the leadership of the Senior School, a role she embraced with dedication and deep responsibility.

Throughout her years as Head of Senior School, Ms Attard Pulis remained close to staff members, students, parents, and the wider college community. She was always approachable and consistently sought to support everyone in the best way possible, placing pastoral care at the heart of her leadership.

Ms Attard Pulis continually strived to live and work according to the five Goals of Sacred Heart Education: Community, Character, Intellect, Faith, and Social Awareness. Her leadership brought about many positive changes, not only through structural developments but also through the introduction of new subjects and programmes such as Health and Social Care, Design and Technology, the King’s Trust International Programme, and Spanish—broadening opportunities and horizons for our students.

The College will always be grateful for her unwavering commitment, her strong sense of service, and her dedication to the pastoral wellbeing of the entire school community. Her legacy will remain firmly embedded in the life of Sacred Heart College.

As she begins a new chapter, we wish Ms Joanna Attard Pulis every blessing for the future. We thank her sincerely for her 30 years of service and pray that the great love she showed towards St Madeleine Sophie Barat may continue to guide and bless her in all her future endeavours.

Welcoming the Second Term Together

The first day of the second term for the staff of Sacred Heart College was a meaningful and enriching one, spent in the serene surroundings of the Seminary in Tal-Virtù.

The day began with the celebration of Holy Mass, led by Fr Clive Seychell, who set a deeply reflective and faith-filled tone for the term ahead. In his homily, Fr Clive passionately reminded us that God is love, and that no good deed we do can make Him love us more than He already does, just as no bad deed can make Him love us any less. He illustrated this message through a powerful example: just as a telescope is used to see the stars and a microscope to see a virus, using these instruments incorrectly would prevent us from seeing anything — yet it would not mean that the stars or the virus do not exist. In the same way, we are called to look for God through faith.

We were also honoured to be joined by the nuns of the Society of the Sacred Heart, who live on the seminary premises, strengthening our sense of shared mission and community.

Following Mass, we were privileged to listen to a heartfelt message by Sr Carmen, former Headmistress and Principal of the College. Sr Carmen thanked the staff for their dedication and encouraged everyone to continue caring for each student’s holistic development, in line with the vision of St Madeleine Sophie Barat.

The day then continued with team-building activities, offering staff members the opportunity to connect, collaborate and get to know one another better. The highlight of the day was the School Mascot Challenge. Working in groups, all 17 teams displayed remarkable creativity, producing mascots that were not only imaginative and fun, but also rich in meaning and symbolism.

It was a day marked by faith, gratitude, collaboration and creativity — a wonderful way to begin the second term together as one Sacred Heart community. One heart and One Mind in the Heart of Jesus.
